'Beautiful and savage' Paula Hawkins, author of The Girl on the Train 'Unforgettable' Liane Moriarity, author of Big Little Lies 'A masterpiece' Guardian 'Devastating' Economist 'Ferocious' NPR She hears her own thick voice deep inside her ears when she says, 'I need to know where I am.' The man stands there, tall and narrow, hand still on the doorknob, surprised. He says, almost in sympathy, 'Oh, sweetie. You need to know what you are.'" Two women awaken from a drugged sleep to find themselves imprisoned in a brokendown property in the middle of a desert. Strangers to each other, they have no idea where they are or how they came to be there with eight other girls, their heads shaved, guarded by two inept yet vicious jailers. Doing hard labour under a sweltering sun, the prisoners soon learn what links them: in each girl's past is a sexual scandal with a powerful man. They pray for rescue but as the hours turn into days and the days into weeks and months, it becomes clear only the girls can rescue themselves. Human beings are a cultural species. This predicament enables them to take on many different cultural identities, all of which transcend the bounds of natural behavior of other species. To contemplate this predicament through philosophy is to reflect on such questions as, What makes cultural forms of life possible? What is encompassed in them? What lies at their core? What distinguishes them from natural forms of life? What brings them about, sustains, and causes them to change? Philosophical answers to these questions predate abstract ways of thinking, as they are sometimes embedded in ancient mythical and religious narratives. Such is the story told in the first three chapters of the book of Genesis in the Bible, revealing how human beings became the cultural beings that they are. This study suggests how that ancient and most celebrated story in the literature of the West may be read as harboring insightful philosophical observations on the cultural nature of human beings. It first focuses on the very concept of cultural forms of life, revealing its complicated conceptual links to natural forms of life. It then offers an interpretive framework for reading mythical, symbolic narratives. Using these ideas, it provides a philosophical reading of the Biblical narrative, disclosing it to harbor a metaphysically oriented conception of nature and two insightful philosophical overviews of the cultural nature of human beings. Both overviews endow human beings with an ability to manipulate nature, but in different ways: the first by subjugating parcels of nature to human will; the second by subjugating human beings themselves to a value-laden conception of things and ethical forms of life. Thus, human beings are portrayed as natural creatures possessed of a cultural nature that enables them to transform nature and recreate themselves through their unique cultural predicament.

I love early mornings, including that period of darkness before sunrise. It is during this special time of day that I can be alone with my thoughts, write uninterrupted, and feel as if I am at my most productive. Over the years I have also found the best way to begin each day is to thank the universe for the gift of a new day. These expressions of gratitude have a way of returning more of what it is I love about my life back to me. I have also found that a good quote, an affirmation or two, thoughts from our ancient wisdom writers, or words of inspiration from a variety of people––especially creative people––are the best way to kick off my day. I make every moment special and meaningful. I make every moment productive and rewarding. I make every moment positive and life-affirming. Enjoying a lifetime’s worth of beautiful days––this is what I Imagine, believe, and create for my whole self each and every day. You can do the same; you too can Imagine Believe Create a lifetime’s worth of beautiful days. How? Open the book to today’s date––it can all begin right now. Have a beautiful day.

The field of religion and ecology is an emerging and growing movement that is becoming relevant and influential in the world. It seeks to analyse, encourage, inspire, use, compare, and combine religious traditions to engage and shape environmental issues. Tony Watling seeks to ethnographically analyse this important field and its expressions. In particular, he analyses and compares its explorations of different world religions for ecological themes and the resulting expressions of ecological visions, in what he terms 'religious ecotopias' - idealized, environmentally-friendly re-imaginings of nature and humanity, and correspondingly religion, which seek to influence environmental attitudes.
