In 1998 in Buenos Aires, five women began a series of conversations about their memories of torture in the ESMA, the School of Naval Mechanics, twenty years before. In 1976 the Armed Forces seized control of Argentina and initiated the National Reorganization Process, which led to the quiet disappearance of 30,000 people, most taken from their homes at night by armed individuals in civilian dress. Between four thousand and forty-five hundred of those who passed through the Mechanics School died in torture or were thrown from an airplane into the sea. A few intellectual workers, like the authors, were spared. But as Tina Rosenberg puts it in her foreword, "The women in this book inhabited a surreal hell in which they were never sure that the knock on the door at midnight meant they were to be taken to the torture table or out for a steak. There were torturers who fell in love with their prey. Munu Actis says, 'They'd come, they'd beat you to a pulp with a stick, and then at two in the morning they'd get you, put you in a car, and take you out to dinner. They'd sit you down at the same table, turn you into an equal: you ate the same food, they wanted to hear your opinions, and then back to Capucha [the wing where captives were kept hooded and shackled] you went. That would drive anybody crazy!'" Tina Rosenberg continues: "The logic of life and death in the Mechanics School had nothing to do with whether one was really a Montoneros guerrilla or whether one broke under torture. The women in this book probably survived because they knew how to translate documents or could concisely summarize press clippings. These were skills of interest to Admiral Emilio Massera, chief of the navy, who was building his political career. Admiral Massera killed Montoneros as dangerous subversives, or kept them alive as0 his political advisers. Or both." The book includes glossaries of the slang used by the militants and by Mechanics School personnel, an appendix identifying the torturers, and a topography of terror," a blueprint of rooms and functions. Last year President Kirchner declared that the Mechanics School would be turned into a Museum of Memory of the atrocities of the "dirty war." Despite this vindication and their testimonies in legal forums, the five women authors continue to struggle with torture-induced terror in their daily lives, particularly in visits to the dentist or doctor.

"Tom Simone's translation is simply superb. Of all the translations with which I am familiar, this is the one that is the most faithful to what's there in the Italian: no frills, no poetic sallies, no choosing a word because it brings the line closer to iambic pentameter—just unadulterated Dante with good old Anglo-Saxon words and in highly readable prose." —Peter Kalkavage, St. John's University

SEEK AND YOU WILL FIND Florence: Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon awakes in a hospital bed with no recollection of where he is or how he got there. Nor can he explain the origin of the macabre object that is found hidden in his belongings. A threat to his life will propel him and a young doctor, Sienna Brooks, into a breakneck chase across the city. Only Langdon’s knowledge of the hidden passageways and ancient secrets that lie behind its historic facade can save them from the clutches of their unknown pursuers. With only a few lines from Dante’s The Inferno to guide them, they must decipher a sequence of codes buried deep within some of the Renaissance’s most celebrated artworks to find the answers to a puzzle which may, or may not, help them save the world from a terrifying threat... When it was published in the summer of 2013, Inferno became a global sensation, selling over 15 million copies in hardcover. This new and exclusive illustrated edition illuminates the sights and cities which form the backdrop to Dan Brown’s most thought-provoking and compelling novel yet, and reveals the rich tapestry of history, art and literature which inspired its narrative.

A HOT TEMPER AND A COOL HAND No one within fifty miles of Whiskey Crossing, Texas, could match Carp Varner’s skill with a sidearm. No one could match his murderous temper either. The approach offered in this study differs from both traditional ways of reading Dante, pursuing an alternate path outside the chronology set out in the "Commedia"--The dark wood to the empyrean - and outside the canto order - first "Inferno", then the "Purgatorio", and lastly the "Paradiso".

There is no cinema with such effect as that of the hallucinatory Italian horror film. From Riccardo Freda’s I Vampiri in 1956 to Il Cartaio in 2004, this work recounts the origins of the genre, celebrates at length ten of its auteurs, and discusses the noteworthy films of many others associated with the genre. The directors discussed in detail are Dario Argento, Lamberto Bava, Mario Bava, Ruggero Deodato, Lucio Fulci, Umberto Lenzi, Antonio Margheriti, Aristide Massaccesi, Bruno Mattei, and Michele Soavi. Each chapter includes a biography, a detailed career account, discussion of influences both literary and cinematic, commentary on the films, with plots and production details, and an exhaustive filmography. A second section contains short discussions and selected filmographies of other important horror directors. The work concludes with a chapter on the future of Italian horror and an appendix of important horror films by directors other than the 50 profiled. Stills, posters, and behind-the-scenes shots illustrate the book.

It is no exaggeration to claim that 46th North Midland Division’s action on 29 September 1918 was the hammer blow that shattered the will of the German High Command. Painting the strategic picture from early 1918 and the dark weeks following the German’s March offensive, the Author lays the ground for the Allied counter-strike. Ahead of them was the mighty Hindenburg Line, the Kaiser’s formidable defensive obstacle given added strength by the St Quentin Canal. Undaunted the Allies attacked using American, Australian and British formations. Led by Major General Boyd, 46 Division stormed the Canal and, thanks to a combination of sound planning and determined courageous fighting, seized their Hindenburg Line objective by the end of the day. The psychological damage to the German will, already weakened by the failure of the Spring offensive, is demonstrate by Ludendorff’s collapse and opening of negotiations that led five weeks later to the Armistice.

Arguing that the consecrated body in the Eucharist is one of the central metaphors structuring The Divine Comedy, this book is the first comprehensive exploration of the theme of transubstantiation across Dante's epic poem. Drawing attention first to the historical and theological tensions inherent in ideas of transubstantiation that rippled through Western culture up to the early fourteenth century, Sheila Nayar engages in a Eucharistic reading of both the "flesh" allusions and "metamorphosis" motifs that thread through the entirety of Dante's poem. From the cannibalistic resonances of the Ugolino episode in the Inferno to the Corpus Christi-like procession seminal to Purgatory, Nayar demonstrates how these sacrifice- and Host-related metaphors, allusions, and tropes lead directly and intentionally to the Comedy's final vision, that of the Eucharist itself. Arguing that the final revelation in Paradise is analogically "the Bread of Life," Nayar brings to the fore Christ's centrality (as sacrament) to The Divine Comedy-a reading that is certain to alter current-day thinking about Dante's poem.
